Large scale emergencies, natural disasters, and other unplanned events are inevitable. As these event types unfold, calls for police, fire, or EMS service can swell to levels significantly higher than day-to-day operations, posing call capacity and other technical challenges to mission-critical systems being used for incident management and response.
In October 2017, the Tubbs Fire burned parts of Sonoma, Napa, and Lake counties in Northern California. As the state’s second most destructive wildfire moved through the area, calls for service coming into the Sonoma County Public Safety Consortium (SCPSC) PSAP grew to seven and a half times the normal call volume (an 822 percent increase) within a few hours. When the agency and affected communities needed it most, Hexagon’s computer-aided dispatch system and incident management solutions demonstrated high availability and resiliency.
