UPM Catedra and Hexagon: Accomplishments in education in 2023

Hexagon is pleased to share the work of its partnership with the Chair of Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) with both students and teachers. We announced our collaboration with UPM in 2022, and 2023 was successful.

Since April, training licenses for Hexagon’s geospatial technology have been available on the UPM Desktop to all students and teachers.

The Chair has consolidated, and this allows us to carry out more seminars. The seminars we’ve done, both online and in person, have covered topics including:

  • Applications of machine learning in data processing from Earth observation systems
  • Machine learning and Spatial Modeler applied to olive tree detection using 20-cm resolution PNOA IGN images
  • ERDAS IMAGINE tool at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering
  • ERDAS IMAGINE and Spatial Modeler applied to use cases in agriculture at the Technical School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering

The collaboration between Hexagon and UPM was active in many ways, including case studies and events. The case studies, conducted by undergraduate students in geospatial information technology engineering, included real-world scenarios such as evaluating the damages caused by the earthquake in Turkey

Events were held, including an awards ceremony hosted by José Luis Peinado Moreno, managing director, Spain at Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division; the UPM graduation ceremony for the School of Engineering in Topography, Geodesy and Cartography including an ERDAS IMAGINE award ceremony; and the Innovation Award for the Chair of UTM at the GEOBUIZ Summit 2023 held in Monterey, California.

Lastly, Julio Lerena and I offered a seminar on the UPM campus called “Hexagon as a leading technological company in the geospatial sector: Keys that will help you in your future,” with students filling the audience.

We plan to continue these activities throughout 2024. Real-world management of critical situations – such as fires and floods – using digital twins in environmental studies, as well as the case study of the digital twin of Campo de Cartagena – presented by Hexagon’s Julio Lerena Fernandez – are just some of the presentations planned.
