Estonian Railways transforms transit asset management with HxGN Mass Transit

Estonian Railways, the backbone of Estonia’s rail transportation system, took a major digital leap with the adoption of Hexagon’s HxGN Mass Transit transit asset management solution. In a bold move to modernize its railway infrastructure, Estonian Railways set out to digitally transform the entire lifecycle of its network — spanning 1,214 kilometers of route length, 61 stations and 129 stops.

Since its initial deployment in November 2020, the system has evolved through multiple phases. At the heart of the initiative lies a clear vision: to centralize infrastructure data and make it accessible, shareable and actionable in both 2D and 3D formats.

“Our challenge was to integrate a wide array of data and workflows into a system that supports real-time decision-making and collaboration,” said Aleksandr Zaitsev, head of digitalization and innovation at Estonian Railways. “With HxGN Mass Transit, we’ve created a unified platform that scales with our needs and strengthens data integrity.”

HxGN Mass Transit enables 700 employees to visualize, manage and modify infrastructure assets through a web-based interface for transit asset management. The system not only streamlines internal operations, but also provides tools for inter-organizational collaboration, allowing seamless data exchange with external partners.

The GIS platform enhances transparency, reduces redundancy and ensures that all users access the most current geospatial and asset data. By managing data more intelligently, Estonian Railways is achieving improved operational efficiency, faster administrative workflows and better control over infrastructure investments.

Estonian Railways’ digital infrastructure project represents a forward-looking model in public transportation modernization and transit asset management — setting the stage for smarter, more connected mobility in Estonia.
